As you
learn about Tanzania’s educational system, it is important to keep a
perspective using some general country statistics. School attendance for
primary school exceeds 80% and is similar for both genders. Girls,
particularly those in rural areas, start to drop out or leave school at age 12,
and the gender gap in attendance widens with increasing age.
The
entire system can really be thought of as a giant funnel with fewer and fewer
students, especially girls, advancing through the levels. By the time
they reach upper secondary school, Africa ID’s Kisa Scholars have already
overcome many obstacles to be there.
- 80% of girls complete primary
school, and only 54% of those progress to secondary school. (World Bank,
2016)
- Only 66% of girls who start
secondary school progress to Form 4. The figure for boys is 77%.
(United Republic of Tanzania, 2015)
- Between 2009 and 2013, the net
enrollment rate for secondary school participation of girls in Tanzania
was 24.4%, compared to 26.2% for boys. (UNICEF, 2015)
- Tanzania is one of the 26
countries in which a girl is more likely to be married before the age of
18 than to be enrolled in secondary school. (Care, 2015)
In
Tanzania there are three main levels of education, which are primary school,
secondary school, and tertiary.
